HAMPTON, Virginia – The UNCW women's basketball team dropped a 38-34 decision at Hampton on Sunday afternoon at the Hampton Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates improved to 6-9 overall and stand 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks slipped to 3-13 overall, including a 0-5 conference mark.
Hampton's Dlayla Chakolis led all scorers with 13 points.
Graduate guard Carrie Gross paced the Seahawks with 11 points while junior forward Lexi Jackson contributed a career-high 16 rebounds.
UNCW, trailing 36-34 with nine seconds left, inbounded the ball to Gross, but the Lady Pirates produced a turnover and converted a fast-break layup on the other end to ice the game with two seconds on the clock.
Hampton carried a 13-11 advantage into halftime and extended their lead to 19-11 six minutes into the the third quaerter. An 11-6 spurt by the Seahawks made it a one-possession game, 25-22, entering the fourth quarter.
A pair of Jayde Gamble free throws trimmed the UNCW deficit to one, 33-32, with 2:34 to play. Hampton, however, scored five of the game's last seven points to pick up the home win.
The Seahawks return home next Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup vs. Elon at Trask Coliseum.
