Seahawks Extend Unbeaten Streak To Six Games

NEWARK, Delaware – The UNCW men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-2 draw at Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon at Grant Stadium.

The Seahawks moved to 3-1-4 overall with a 2-0-2 mark in CAA play. The Blue Hens stand 2-5-2 this year and are 0-3-1 in the conference.

After Delaware took a 2-1 lead on two goals within 12 minutes in the second half, UNCW's Josef Hefele scored his first goal of the season to even the score in the 79th minute. Hefele's marker came from a free kick by Gabe Mercer, who totaled a season-high three points vs. the Blue Hens.

Mercer started the day with a direct free-kick goal from roughly 25 yards out with 2:16 remaining in the first half to give the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Delaware's Brandon Sengphachanh entered in the 60th minute and tied the game 62 seconds later on a shot to the bottom right of the goal from outside the box. The Blue Hens went ahead, 2-1, 12 minutes later when Sam Donnellan netted his CAA-leading fifth goal from a cross by Alonso Rodriguez.

The Seahawks stayed on the attack until Mercer's free kick was made good by Hefele to keep UNCW as the lone CAA squad with an unbeaten conference record.

UNCW is back in action next Saturday, Oct. 1, at Northeastern at 6 p.m.
