Anderson, Mercer Power Seahawks Over Gamecocks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – An aggressive second half featuring goals from seniors Jalen Anderson and Gabe Mercer powered UNCW to a 2-0 win over South Carolina in men's soccer action on Tuesday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks upped their record to 2-1-2 with their third shutout of the season. The Gamecocks dipped to 2-3-1 in their lone road match this month.

Anderson recorded three of UNCW's eight shots, six of which were after a scoreless first half. The Hamden, Conn., product collected a season-high three points with a goal and an assist.

"This was a really good South Carolina team. In the first half, they were really on top of us," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "We made some adjustments in the second half and got the initial goal which gave us a little more energy. It's a great night for the guys and a testament to the work they put in for every ball."

After collecting an assist in the previous two games, Mercer was on the scoring end of a UNCW goal. The 5-10 midfielder shot in a ball that had ricocheted off South Carolina's Ben Alexander to give UNCW a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the second half. Anderson and defender Josef Hefele provided assists on Mercer's game-winning goal.

Anderson got in on the action with the Seahawks' first penalty kick score of 2022 after the Gamecocks fouled Omar Aboutaleb inside the box at the 74-minute mark.

UNCW closes out its homestand with a Colonial Athletic Association match-up against Drexel on Saturday at 7 p.m.
