Sims Makes NBA Summer League Debut

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW men's basketball great Jaylen Sims has a big weekend ahead when the Charlotte native takes the floor with the Toronto Raptors on Saturday afternoon (July 9, 2022) for the franchise's opening 2K23 Summer League game in Las Vegas.

"The opportunity to play for the Raptors organization in the Summer League is a great honor," said Sims. "I'm blessed to be playing with such a great organization, and I'm learning a lot."

A gifted 6-6, 210-pound guard, Sims led the Seahawks in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (5.5 rpg) and assists (2.4) as the team went 27-9 and won the 2022 Roman College Basketball Invitational. The versatile performer earned First-Team All-CAA honors when the Seahawks earned a share of the regular season title and was later named CBI Tournament MVP following UNCW's dramatic run to its first postseason championship.

Sims and his Raptors teammates face the Philadelphia 76ers in Saturday's 3:30 p.m. ET debut. Toronto, coached by Trevor Gleeson in the Summer League, will suit up a roster of 15 players, including veterans Dalano Banton, Armoni Brooks, Davis Johnson and D.J. Wilson. In addition to Sims and the returnees, the roster features 2022 draft pick Christian Koloko and highly regarded rookie Ron Harper, Jr.

The NBA's 2K23 Summer League consists of 75 games over 11 days, with each team guaranteed five games – four preliminary round games and one final contest. The Summer League's championship game will be played between the two teams with the best records in the preliminary round.

Toronto, coached by Nick Nurse, has won seven Atlantic Division titles and captured the 2019 NBA Championship. The Raptors were founded in 1995 as part of the NBA's expansion into Canada and remain the league's only Canadian-based team after the Vancouver Grizzlies relocated to Memphis in 2001.
