UNCW Sees Cougars Tie Series With 10-3 win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trey Pooser tossed six shutout innings and the College of Charleston pounded out 14 hits as the Cougars eased past UNCW to even the Colonial Athletic Association series on Saturday with a 10-3 win.

The Cougars improved to 30-15 on the season with the road win and to 17-3 in conference play. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fell to 25-20 and 10-7 in the league.

Pooser (4-1) made quick work of the UNCW lineup, scattering four hits, walking three and striking out four while lowering his earned run average to 3.04. William Privette pitched the final three innings for his league-leading 10th save of the year.

Sam Cochrane held game-high honors with three hits while Tyler Sorrentino had two hits and scored twice.

UNCW's Cyle Phelan (2-1) retired the first six batters he faced but couldn't get out of the third inning as CofC erupted for four runs.

Brooks Baldwin had a pair of hits to pace the Seahawks, who managed just six hits on the afternoon. Ethan Baucom ruined the CofC shutout bid with a three-run homer in the seventh. It was his 11th of the season.

How it happened: Cochrane led off the third inning with a single and was moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Cam Dean got the Cougars on the board with a RBI single one batter later and after a walk and hit batter by Phelan to load the bases, JT Marr made it 3-0 with a two-run single to right. The final run came across on Landon Choboy's safety squeeze on batter later.

Inside the box score: CofC was 8-for-12 with RISP while Baucom's home run was UNCW's lone hit with RISP on the afternoon … UNCW had just one leadoff hitter reach safely … The Seahawks did leave nine runners on base, including three in scoring position.

Home Runs: UNCW – Ethan Baucom (11, two on and two out in the seventh, 412 feet to left center, 105 exit velo)

Up next: The teams will play the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Seahawks look to avoid losing their second-straight home CAA series.
