Diamond Hawks Take Series Opener From Cougars

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW received another strong start from freshman RJ Sales and John Newton, another freshman, delivered a clutch two-run single in the fifth inning as the Seahawks edged the College of Charleston, 4-3, on Friday in a Colonial Athletic Association series opener.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 25-19 on the season and moved into second place in the league standings with a 10-6 mark. The Cougars saw their 12-game conference winning streak snapped while their record fell to 29-15 and 16-3.

Newton drove in two runs in the fifth inning on a single that came on the 12th pitch of the at bat. Brooks Baldwin belted his seventh home run of the season to give the Seahawks an early lead. Taber Mongero scored twice and collected his second triple of the season.

Sales, who earned the win following three consecutive no-decisions, upped his record to 5-1. Sales allowed a pair of runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out three while recording 13 ground ball outs. Hunter Hodges nailed down his sixth save of the season, getting the final two outs of the game.

Tyler Sorrentino, Landon Choboy and Cam Dean each had two hits for the Cougars, who out-hit the Seahawks, 11-5.

Ty Good (7-4) was saddled with the loss. Good surrendered three runs on four hits and a pair of walks and finished with seven strikeouts.

How it happened: UNCW struck for a run in the fourth on a Baldwin's shot to left center and extended the lead to 3-0 on Newton's two-run single to center field with two outs.

Inside the box score: UNCW pitching limited the Cougars to 2-of-9 hitting with RISP … CofC had five two out hits and stranded nine runners on base, including six in scoring position … With 10 assists in the field for Taber Mongero tied the UNCW single-game record and became the first Seahawk since Ben Thielsen to reach double digits since 2009.
