Tigers Down Seahawks In Regional Opener

CLEMSON, South Carolina – Clemson left-hander Millie Thompson fired a no-hitter as the 10th-seeded Tigers downed UNCW, 9-0, in five innings to open the NCAA Softball Championship at McWhorter Stadium on Friday.
 
Clemson, 40-15, moved into the winner's bracket against Auburn, a 4-3 winner over Louisiana in the day's second game. The Seahawks, 32-14, had their four-game winning streak snapped and will take on Louisiana, 45-12, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
 
Thompson picked up her 14th win with four strikeouts over five innings. The southpaw needed 49 pitches for her second career no-hitter.
 
UNCW right-hander Emily Winstead (13-9) was tagged for six runs on four hits with two walks in the loss. Junior Amberlyn Pearce, making her first appearance since Apr. 24 vs. Charleston, pitched 3.1 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.
 
The Tigers rattled off five hits, including a two-run home run off the bat of Alia Logoleo, to go up 6-0 in the first inning. Clemson scored five runs with two-outs after Winstead recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Valerie Cagle and Marissa Guimbarda.
 
Clemson added a pair of runs in the third inning with top of the order hitters Cammy Pereria and McKenzie Clark driving in a pair of runs. An inning later, Logoleo picked up her game-high third RBI with a groundout that scored pinch-runner Carlee Shannon.
