Louisiana Edges Seahawks In Extra Innings

CLEMSON, South Carolina – Louisiana's Taylor Roman hit a game-winning, two-run home run in the 11th inning to best UNCW, 3-1, in a rubber match on Saturday at McWhorter Stadium in the 2022 NCAA Softball Championships.

The Ragin' Cajuns, 46-12, move on to play another elimination game against Auburn on Saturday night. The Seahawks, 32-15, conclude their historic season with the program's first 11-inning game in five seasons.

Freshman right-hander Kara Hammock was phenomenal, pitching a career-high 10 innings with 10 strikeouts on 148 pitches. The Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year limited Louisiana to one run and stranded 12 runners on base.

A trio of Ragin' Cajuns – Sophie Piskos, Melissa Mayeux, and Karly Heath- accounted for six of Louisiana's 16 hits, including three apiece by Mayeux and Heath.

With the Seahawks down a run, freshman Lauryn Richardson worked a five-pitch walk to lead off the top of the seventh and was pinch-ran for by Tayler Vitola, the starting second baseman. Senior Janel Gamache then blooped a single into shallow right field for UNCW's first hit, which moved Vitola to second.

Freshman Mackenzie Amodeo advanced Vitola to third on a fielder's choice that nabbed Gamache at second. Senior Taylor Smith pinch-ran for Amodeo and attempted a delayed steal. Smith baited a throw to second, allowing Vitola to tie the game from third.

The game remained even with both teams trading scoreless frames until the bottom of the 11th inning when Louisiana junior Raina O'Neal singled up the middle with one out. Two batters later, Roman connected on the game-winning round-tripper on a 1-0 count to advance the Cajuns.

Mayeux started the fourth inning with a triple. The Le Barcares, France, product was followed by Heath, who legged out an infield single and swiped second to put two runners in scoring position. Hammock struck out the next batter, Samantha Graeter, but a wild pitch allowed Mayeux to score the contest's first run.
