Seahawks Split Doubleheader In Home Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The strong pitching of freshmen righthanders Kara Hammock and Emily Winstead was on display as UNCW and Elon split a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader in the Seahawks' home finale on Sunday at Boseman Field.

The Phoenix, 27-21 (10-8 CAA), earned the series win with a 1-0 victory in eight innings in the second game after claiming Saturday's series opener. The Seahawks, 28-12 (10-8 CAA), took the Noon game, 9-1, in six innings.

UNCW honored three veterans – Anna KnoxCasey Jones, and Taylor Smith – in a postgame ceremony. The Seahawks closed out their home schedule with a 20-8 record, the most home wins since 2017.

UNCW concludes the regular season next weekend at Drexel. The Seahawks have already clinched a berth to the 2022 CAA Championships hosted by Elon from May 12-14.

Game 1 | UNCW 9, Elon 1 (six innings)

Second baseman Tayler Vitola scored three runs with two hits. The Seahawks broke the battle open with seven runs in the third and fourth innings.

Vitola started the bottom of the first with a four-pitch walk before speeding around to third base on an Anna Knox sacrifice-bunt. Senior Janel Gamache was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out.

Right fielder Morgan Brittwho also had two hits, drove in Vitola from third on a fielder's choice groundout that nabbed Gamache at second.

Jones highlighted her Senior Day with a two-out, two-run single into left field that capped a four-run third inning for the Seahawks. Jones was the fifth straight batter to reach base in the inning.

Third baseman Logan Bjorson singled to left field to start the third. Knox then worked a full-count walk after the Phoenix recorded two quick outs. Gamache followed with a dribbler to third that was bobbled and plated Bjorson.

Britt added another run on a single through the left side. Shortstop Mary Sobataka was hit by a pitch to load the bases and set the stage for the senior Jones, who broke the game open.

UNCW tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Bjorson and Lauren Cope reached to start the frame. The pair came around to score on a Vitola bunt. Elon tried to nail Cope at home, but the throw was late and advanced Vitola to second. The Phoenix retired the next two batters before Britt singled up the middle that easily scored Vitola.

In the sixth inning, Vitola laid down a bunt but the throw sailed into right field and Vitola raced around to third base. Elon's right fielder, Drew Menscer, tried to peg Vitola at third but the throw across the diamond was off the mark as Vitola trotted home from third to win the game.

Hammock (11-3) scattered six hits across six innings, allowing no earned runs with one strikeout.

Game 2 | Elon 1, UNCW 0 (eight innings)

Elon freshmen McKenna McCard and Taylor Cherry prevailed in a rematch of Saturday's freshmen rubber match against Winstead.

The contest was well-pitched, with both sides only allowing one hit apiece. The teams totaled three walks and left a combined six runners aboard.

McCard tossed the first five innings for the Phoenix with her lone blemish, a Sobataka single, occurring in the second inning. Cherry, Saturday's starting pitcher, worked the final three innings and faced one batter over the minimum to get her second win of the weekend.

Winstead pitched a career-high eight innings, allowing no earned runs and fanning 10 batters. The 5-8 phenom carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before Menscer led off the frame with a single through the left side. Menscer advanced to second on a wild pitch with none out. Winstead induced two quick outs, a fly-out and a ground out, to bring Elon's Kaitlyn Wells to the plate. On a 0-1 pitch, Wells sent a ball into right field that the Seahawks were unable to corral as Menscer scored from second and Wells advanced to third base.

Bjorson reached in the bottom of the frame and advanced to second on a groundout, but the Seahawks could not drive home the tying run.
