Seahawks Plate Four Runs To Win In Extras

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – An hour rain delay did not deter the UNCW softball team, who plated four runs on four hits in extra innings to down Drexel, 4-0, at the Drexel Softball Stadium on a drizzling Friday in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Seahawks improved to 29-13 overall and 11-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dragons dipped to 24-23 overall and 5-14 in the conference.

Freshman right-hander Emily Winstead (11-8) tossed eight innings for the second straight game to pick up the win. The rookie phenom scattered two hits and struck out five in her 10th complete game and third shutout.

Drexel's Brooklyn Daly (10-9) countered Winstead with seven scoreless innings before the Seahawks tagged the graduate right-hander for four runs, three unearned, in the top of the eighth. Daly allowed eight hits and two walks in the complete-game loss.

Freshman catcher Mackenzie Amodeo recorded her eighth career multi-hit game with a single and RBI double. The Goldsboro, N.C., product was one of seven Seahawks to hit safely in the midday contest.

With one out in the eighth, sophomore Tayler Vitola singled through the right side and stole second. Senior Janel Gamache then drove a ball to the right-center gap that was misplayed and fell in. Vitola scored on the play while Gamache advanced to second.

Amodeo traded places with Lauren Cope, who pinch-ran for Gamache, when she rocketed a ball down the left-field line for her seventh extra-base hit of the season. Two batters later, Anna Knox singled to left to plate Amodeo and took third on a wayward throw to home. Shortstop Mary Sobataka added a fourth run, Knox, with a single up the middle on a 3-2 count to cap the offensive outburst.

The teams conclude the 2022 regular season with a doubleheader at Noon on Saturday at Penn Park on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
