Diamond Hawks Too Much For Pride, Clinch Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cyle Phelan tossed seven innings of shutout baseball and UNCW plated eight runs in the third inning on its way to a series clinching 11-0 win over Hofstra on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who have won their last five-in-a-row, pushed their record to 18-11 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pride, meanwhile, has dropped its last three and slipped to 12-13 and 4-4 in the league.

Phelan (2-0) allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out five in picking up the win. Relievers Noah Overton and Cody Benton closed out the shutout, UNCW's fifth of the season.

Taber Mongero had three hits to lead both teams, it was hit seventh three-hit outing of the season. John Newton and Bryan Arendt both had two hits, including home runs. Ethan Baucom added his fifth home run of the season.

Tristan Nemjo (0-5) allowed eight runs over 2.2 innings in taking the loss.

Steve Harrington and Michael Florides had singles for Hofstra.

How it happened: UNCW exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away. Twelve batters made their way to the plate during the outburst that included a grand slam by Newton and a two-run shot by Arendt.

Inside the box score: UNCW finished with four two-out hits and landed its leadoff hitter on base three times … Phelan held the Pride hitless until Harrington singled in the fifth with two out … Game time was 2:17 bringing total game time for the first two games to four hours and 35 min. … Dillon Lifrieri's hitting streak is now nine games, one short of his career-long 10 games set last season … Phelan's ERA dropped to 1.95 and opponents batting average is down to .150 … UNCW had eight two-out RBI's.
