Pride Prevents CAA Sweep By Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Hofstra struck for four runs in the eighth inning to wipe out a 2-0 deficit and prevent a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep by UNCW on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Pride evened its record at 13-13 overall and 5-4 in the CAA. The Seahawks, who had a five-game winning streak halted, saw their record dip to 18-12 and 3-3.

Hofstra starter Brad Camardo (5-0) earned the win to stay undefeated on the season. He held UNCW to five hits and two runs over seven innings. Michael O'Hanlon tossed two scoreless innings for his third save of the season.

Jake Liberatore collected two hits and scored twice for the Pride.

Matt Suggs had two hits for the Seahawks, including his team-leading eighth home run of the season, and he drove in both UNCW runs.

Ethan Chenault (1-4) took the loss in relief. He surrendered four runs, one earned, while walking three in 2/3 of an inning.

How it happened: Liberatore singled to open the eighth inning and after two quick outs, Hofstra drew three consecutive walks to force in a run. With the bases loaded, Scott Harrington bounced back to the mound, but the throw to first was high and wound up down the first base line, clearing the bases for a 4-2 Hofstra lead.

Inside the box score: Both teams struggled with RISP, both going 1-for-8 … UNCW advanced runners on just three occasions in 12 opportunities … Both teams combined to go 2-for-27 with runners on base … UNCW starter Zane Taylor allowed just two hits over his seven shutout innings but did not receive a decision … Dillon Lifrieri tied his career-long hitting streak of 10 games with a fifth inning single.

Up next: The Seahawks visit NC State on Tuesday in the first game of the annual home-and-home series between the two programs. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Doak Field.
