Seahawks Drop Series Opener To Elon

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Elon center fielder Rebecca Murray's fifth-inning two-run double was the difference as UNCW dropped the softball series opener to Elon, 3-1, at Boseman Field on Saturday.

The Phoenix moved to 26-19 overall and 9-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks dipped to 27-12 on the year and are 9-7 in the circuit. The in-state rivals will conclude the three-game set with a Sunday doubleheader at Noon.

The Seahawks clinched a berth in the 2022 CAA Championships by virtue of Towson falling in both games of a doubleheader at Charleston. The Phoenix, who will host the tournament, also secured a spot in the five-team field with a win.

Elon freshman pitcher Taylor Cherry (5-6) earned the win, tossing seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball with five strikeouts and two walks. The right-handed Cherry was briefly lifted in the third inning when McKenna McCard faced two batters before Cherry re-entered.

Right-hander Emily Winstead (10-7) set UNCW's freshman strikeout record with a punchout of Elon's Bella Devesa to start the second inning. The Bunn, N.C., product recorded her eighth complete game, while her 14 strikeouts were one-off the school's benchmark set by Rylee Pate in 2020.

The teams totaled three hits and worked eight walks in the low-scoring contest that was decided by Murray's two-strike double, Elon's only hit of the game, with two outs in the fifth.

The Phoenix cashed in three-straight walks to start the game with a sac-fly that plated a run off the bat of senior Megan White with one out. Winstead limited the damage there with a strikeout of Chloe Hatzopoulos to end the frame.

Winstead fanned Keagan Goldwait to start the fifth before issuing two free passes to Allee Seering and Megan Grant. Senior Raelyn McGarry entered to pinch-hit but struck out looking. Winstead then had Murray down 0-2, before the senior slugger lined one into left field, over the head of Elizabeth Winstead that plated a pair of insurance runs.

Third baseman Anna Knox led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to straightaway center and moved to third on a groundout. Junior Jentri Meadows pinch-hit and laced a liner to centerfield that fell into Murray's glove and allowed Knox to score, but the Seahawks were unable to rally further.

UNCW will honor three seniors – Knox, Casey Jones, and Taylor Smith – in a ceremony following Sunday's twinbill that caps UNCW's home schedule.

GAME NOTES: Winstead pitched a one-hitter for the second time this season … The teams left a combined eight runners on base … Elon worked six walks … The Seahawks have stolen 97 bases … Three batters were hit in the game … Cherry threw 85 pitches … Winstead retired six batters-looking … Winstead is up to 152 punchouts this season … A moment of silence was held before the game to honor James Madison's Lauren Bernett, who passed away on Monday.
