Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Win Eighth CAA Tennis Crown

ELON, North Carolina – The dynasty remains intact. And it may not end soon.

UNCW's young men's tennis team captured the school's eighth conference title in the last 13 years by defeating Elon, 4-2, in the championship match of the 2022 CAA Men's Tennis Championships on Sunday at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The No. 2 seeded Seahawks, 15-8, claimed the all-important doubles point and then added three clutch singles victories in their fifth consecutive championship match appearance. UNCW has won the CAA crown in four of the last five seasons and nailed down its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance with the convincing win.

Elon, the No. 4 seed, concluded the season at 15-9 after becoming the first No. 4 seed since 2015 to reach the finals by upsetting No. 1 William & Mary, 4-2, in the semifinals. The Phoenix were the last team to beat UNCW in the CAA Tournament, edging the Seahawks, 4-3, in the 2019 title match.

The Seahawks have won 14 of their last 15 CAA Tournament matches dating back to 2017. UNCW stands 38-26 all-time in the CAA Tournament.

"We're very excited," said 15-year Head Coach Mait DuBois. "We had some tough moments throughout the year, but I'm really proud of how the guys stayed the course and persevered. You just don't see two freshmen roll into the conference tournament and put in the kind of performance they did.

"It was really fitting for Gabe (Hurtado) to clinch after the work he's put in. He worked through some things, doubled down and it really paid off.

"We had to hand the adversity of playing in a tough environment. The Elon crowd was very enthusiastic and it didn't seem to phase our team in the toughest moments. We didn't let it become a factor."

In doubles play on Sunday, the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Gabe Hurtado and freshman Trey Mallory clinched the key point for the Seahawks by topping Elon's Nick Campbell and Nicholas Condos, 6-2. Dillon Gooch and Bekhzod Rasamatov won the first doubles match, 6-3, vs. Elon's Daniel Martin and Chung-Han Tsai at the No. 1 slot.

Elon squared the match at 1-all at No. 2 singles when Campbell recorded a 6-1, 6-3, straight set victory over UNCW's Davide Innocenti. But Seahawk freshman Trey Mallory's 6-4, 6-2, victory vs. Ben Zipay at No. 6 singles gave the Seahawks the lead right back, 2-1, with four matches on the court.

Freshman Harold Huens then blew past Elon's Nicholas Condos, 6-2, 6-1, to raise the score to 3-1, until the Phoenix cut into the lead when Elon veteran Kyle Frankel edged Reece Falck, 7-6 (5), 6-4, at the top of the lineup, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

UNCW needed just one victory in the last two matches on the court and Hurtado delivered. The Bogota, Colombia, product rallied past Elon's Camilo Ponce, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles for his team-high fourth clincher of the season and setting off a wild celebration on the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center courts.

Pairings for the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships will be announced on Monday, May 2, 2022, on NCAA.com at 6 p.m.
