Blue Raiders Blank Seahawks In Regional

RALEIGH, North Carolina – No. 16 national seed Middle Tennessee State nailed down the early point and then added victories in the first three singles matches of the court to shut out UNCW, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Raleigh Regionals on Friday at NC State's J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
 
The Blue Raiders, the top seed in the regional, improved to 28-4 and will face the winner of Friday's late match between NC State-Liberty match in Saturday's regional final. UNCW, which won its second straight Colonial Athletic Association crown two weeks ago, finished the year at 15-9.
 
In the first meeting between the two teams, MT claimed the early point when the No. 2 tandem of Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump trimmed UNCW's Davide Innocenti and Reece Falck, 6-3. The No. 3 team for the Blue Raiders, Stepan Holis and Chris Edge, topped UNCW's Gabe Hurtado and Trey Mallory, 6-3, to set up the doubles clincher for the Conference USA champions.
 
The Blue Raiders pushed their lead to 2-0 when Motl, a senior from Prstice, Czech Republic, defeated Seahawk freshman, Trey Mallory, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. MT then added another point at the top of the lineup as Slump, ranked 65th in the latest ITA rankings, raced past Innocenti, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.
 
MT clinched a berth in the regional final with a victory at No. 4 singles. Holis, a graduate transfer from New Mexico, beat UNCW sophomore Gabe Hurtado, 6-2, 6-4, to secure the match for the Blue Raiders, who are making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
