Seahawks Drop Season Finale To Cougars

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Charleston rallied from a 3-1 deficit to slip past UNCW, 4-3, in the regular season women's tennis finale for both teams on Saturday at the UNCW Courts.
 
Playing the second of back-to-back matches against each other to close out the regular slate, the two Colonial Athletic Association rivals battled in a back-and-forth match that was decided by a tie-breaker at No. 5 singles.
 
The surging Cougars won their fourth in a row to improve to 18-6 overall, including 3-4 on the road. The Seahawks closed out their home schedule with an 8-3 mark at the UNCW courts and carry a 12-6 record into next weekend's CAA Championships.
 
UNCW won the doubles point to grab an early 1-0 advantage and then jumped in front 3-1 before the Cougars won the final three singles matches off the court to move to 22-5 lifetime against the Seahawks.
 
UNCW won the doubles point for the 14th time and took a 1-0 lead when the No. 1 tandem of Sasha Belaya and Lauren Gish trimmed CofC's Halli Trinkle and Slade Coetzee, 7-5.
 
After a loss at the No. 2 position to open singles play, the Seahawks built a 3-1 advantage after Rachel Marthinsen prevailed over Victoria Walter, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles and Belaya outlasted Coetzee, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4m, at the top of the lineup.
 
The Cougars stormed back, however, with wins at No. 4, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to secure the match.
