Late Home Run Upends Seahawks at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Nick Vera's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth lifted Delaware to a series-tying 3-2 win over UNCW on Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Blue Hens improved to 22-15 overall and 6-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association while the Seahawks saw their records fall to 22-15 and 7-4.

Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, UD's JJ Freeman cut the deficit in half with his second round tripper of the series.

Chris Thorburn and Bryan Arendt each had two hits for UNCW. Taber Mongero belted his fourth home run of the season to give UNCW a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Cody Benton (0-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and Vera's homer in 1/3 of an inning.

UD reliever Zach Klapack shut down the Seahawks over his three hitless innings out of the bullpen.

How it happened: With one out in the eighth, Benton came on for Noah Overton. Benton surrendered a single to left, but the tying run was cut down at the plate on a throw from Dillon Lifrieri. Vera followed with a homer to left on a 1-1 offering to give UD the lead.

Inside the box score: UCW Cyle Phelan tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout baseball, but he did walk five and struck out four … Both teams combined to strand nine runners apiece as pitching ruled the afternoon … All three Delaware runs were scored with two outs … UNCW was hit by a season-high five pitches …

Home Runs: UNCW - Mongero (4, bases empty with one out in the first to right field); UD – Freeman (8, bases empty with two out in the seventh to right field), Vera (6, one man on, two out in the eighth to left field)

Up next: The two programs will play Sunday at 1 p.m. to decide the series winner.
