Baucom Homers Twice In Series Clinching Win

The Diamond Hawks defeated Delaware, 11-8, on Sunday

NEWARK, Del. – Ethan Baucom homered twice and drove in four runs and Chris Thorburn added three hits as UNCW earned a Colonial Athletic Association series win at Delaware on Sunday with an 11-8 win at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The series win for the Seahawks (23-15, 8-4 CAA) was their first road series win since sweeping Kentucky during the 2019 season. The Blue Hens saw their record slip to 22-16 on the season and 6-6 in the league).

Baucom, who also finished with three hits, doubled in two runs in a six-run first inning. Thorburn also drove in two runs. Adding two-hit games for the Seahawks were Jac Croom, Matt Suggs and Bryan Arendt. Arendt belted his third home run of the season in that first inning.

Freshman Zane Taylor (3-0) earned the win going 6.1 innings and striking out five.

Aidan Kane was one of four Blue Hens to finish with two hits. He doubled twice and scored twice. Joe Carpenter had a three-run homer, his seventh of the season, in the seventh inning.

Starter Wyatt Nelson (2-1) surrendered six runs in the first inning and took the loss.

How it happened: UNCW sent nine hitters to the plate in the first-inning uprising. Baucom opened the scoring with a two-run double into the left center gap. Dillon Lifrieri followed with an RBI-double to right center and two batters later, Suggs lifted a sac fly to center to make it 4-0. One batter later Arendt belted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left with a man on to make it 6-0.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks were hit by four pitches on Sunday and finished the weekend being plunked 13 times … Baucom regained the lead as the NCAA's active career-leader with 61 home runs … Thorburn and Croom both have eight-game hitting streaks … UNCW now leads the all-time series, 41-26.
