UNCW Takes Series Opener From Delaware In Extra Innings

NEWARK, Del. – Ethan Baucom's bases-loaded walk in the top of the 11th inning forced in the eventual winning run as UNCW knocked off Delaware, 6-5, in extra innings on Friday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Seahawks upped their record in the Colonial Athletic Association to 7-3 with the road win and 22-14 overall. The Blue Hens, meanwhile, dropped to 5-5 with the league loss and 21-15 on the season.

John Newton, Baucom and Noah Bridges collected two hits apiece for the Seahawks while Suggs drove in two runs with a single in a four-run seventh inning that saw UNCW take a 5-3 lead. Jac Croom tripled in two runs to tie the game at 3-all in that same inning.

Jason Hudak (3-0) earned the win in relief, tying his career-long of three innings and allowing just one hit.

Aidan Kane had three hits for the Blue Hens, who held a 3-1 lead after six innings. JJ Freeman added two hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and Jake Dunion finished with two hits and scored twice.

Mike Biasiello (2-2) was tagged with the loss despite striking out six in 4.1 innings of relief.

How it happened: Newton opened the 11th with a single and Taber Mongero moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Dillon Lifrieri was intentionally walked one batter later. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet and Croom loaded the bases with a walk. Baucom worked a two-out walk from Biasiello to force Newton in with the go-ahead run.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks stranded 14 runners on base … UNCW out-hit the Blue Hens, 11-9 … UNCW starter RJ Sales allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out five … Reliever Cole Beton retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning … Tonight was UNCW's first extra-inning game of the season.

Home Runs: DEL – Freeman (7, one out in the fourth inning)

Up next: The Seahawks look to clinch the series on Saturday with a 3 p.m. start.
