UNCW Slugs Its Way Past VMI, 9-6

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW slugged its way to a series clinching 9-6 win over VMI on Saturday at Brooks Field behind home runs from Brooks Baldwin, Bryan Arendt and Dillon Lifrieri.

UNCW improved to 15-11 overall and 13-5 at home. The Keydets, meanwhile, dropped to 8-19 and 1-12 on the road.

Baldwin led the Seahawk lineup with four runs batted in, including two on his sixth home run of the season coming in the fourth inning as UNCW narrowed an early deficit to 3-2. Taber Mongero collected three hits and scored twice while Lifrieri also had two hits, including his team-leading seventh round tripper of the season.

Reliever Cole Benton (1-) earned the win and Hunter Hodges converted his second save.

JT Inskeep scored three times and had two hits for the Keydets, who built a 3-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings. Zac Morris had two hits and drove in two while Will Knight chipped in two hits.

Will Riley (0-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits over 2.1 innings.

How it happened: After seeing VMI tie the game with a two-run sixth at 5-all, Mongero doubled with one out and Baldwin followed one batter later with a double scoring Mongero for a 6-5 lead. Two batters later, Ethan Baucom singled up the middle to score Baldwin and make it 7-5 Seahawks. VMI cut the deficit to 7-6 in the top of the eighth, but solo homers from Arendt and Lifrieri in the bottom of the inning gave UNCW a 9-6 lead.

Inside the box score: Both teams had four hits with RISP … VMI held a 4-2 lead in two-out RBI's … UNCW advanced runners in 5-of-10 opportunities … Baldwin has now homered and stole a base in the same game four times this season … Ethan Chenault tossed a scoreless inning of relief for UNCW.
