It's A Sweep For the Diamond Hawks

UNCW moves into second place in the CAA with a 6-3 record

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jack Howell and Jac Croom each had two hits as UNCW held off Towson, 8-6, to finish off a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who improved to 19-6 at home, pushed their record to 21-13 overall and 6-3 in the conference. The Tiger saw their record dip to 9-26 and 0-9.

Howell doubled twice and knocked in two runs while Croom belted his fifth home run of the season. Joining Croom with a round tripper was John Newton, who hit his sixth home run of the season and drew three walks. Chris Thorburn added two hits and scored twice.

Cole Benton (2-1) was credited with the win while Hunter Hodges pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth for his fifth save.

Elijah Dickerson had two hits, including his sixth home run of the season and his second of the series. James Moses also homered; it was his second of the season.

Starter Nick Janowicz (2-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits and a walk and took the loss.

How it happened: UNCW jumped to 2-0 lead in the first inning when Matt Suggs, doubled inside the third base bag, scoring Thorburn and Newton. Newton pushed it to a 4-0 lead in the third with a towering shot to right center with Thorburn.

Inside the box score: UNCW was 3-for-10 with RISP and landed the leadoff hitter on base four times … Towson was able to get its leadoff hitter on base six times on Sunday and finished the series doing so 15 times … UNCW pitching allowed just one two-out hit on the game … Newton's home run extended his hitting streak to six games … UNCW leads the all-time series 49-19, 32-7 at Brooks Field and has won the last seven meetings.
