Seahawks Rally To Split Doubleheader

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Both UNCW and Hofstra rallied from two-run deficits to split a doubleheader to open the series between two of the top three teams in the Colonial Athletic Association softball standings at Bill Edwards Stadium on Friday afternoon.

UNCW, 25-9 (7-4 CAA), rallied to take the second game, 6-2, after the Pride, 14-21 (7-3 CAA), claimed the series opener, 3-2, to set up an important finale on Saturday at noon that could have major seeding implications for the CAA Championships in May.

GAME 1 | Hofstra 3, UNCW 2
A Chelsea Manto RBI sac-fly in the bottom of the fifth inning was the difference in the contest as the Pride took the rubber match in the opener.

UNCW struck first, cashing in with the bases loaded when shortstop Mary Sobataka bunted home Mackenzie Amodeo from third. A head's up play by Morgan Britt, who raced around from second, added another run on the play.

The Pride evened the score in the bottom of the frame on a Megan Giordano two-run home run to left field that also scored Manto, who started the inning with an infield single.

The teams traded scoreless frames over the next 3.5 innings until the first two Hofstra batters reached in the fifth to set the stage for Manto's decisive sac-fly.

Hofstra junior Nikki Mullin pitched her first complete game of the season, striking out six and scattering four hits to pick up her second win of the season.

Freshman right-hander Emily Winstead struck out seven over five innings, including fanning six of the first eight batters faced, on the way to her eighth straight game with seven or more punchouts.

GAME 2 | UNCW 6, Hofstra 2

The Seahawks returned the favor in the afternoon affair, plating three runs in both the third and sixth innings, to even the series entering Saturday.

Amodeo highlighted her sixth career multi-hit game with two RBI singles that resulted in three runs for UNCW. The freshman went 3-for-5 with a walk in two games against the Pride.

With one out in the third, Skylar Stockton and Tayler Vitola reached base and stole bases to put two runners in scoring position for Anna Knox.

The graduate utility player reached on a fielder's choice that nailed Stockton at home. Knox, however, induced a rundown between first and second that allowed Vitola to sneak in from second to plate UNCW's first run.

Amodeo followed with a single through the left side to score Knox for her eighth RBI of the season.

After Britt and Sobataka reached to load the bases, left fielder Elizabeth Winstead slapped a dribbler to the right of the circle that the Pride were unable to field as a third run crossed home in the inning.

In the top of the sixth, freshman Lauren Cope split the right-center gap for a stand-up double to start the frame. Two more Seahawks reached to load the bases with no outs.

Much like the third inning, Knox plated a run on a groundout to second, and then Amodeo broke the game open with a two-out single into left field that added two insurance runs.

The Pride struck first in the bottom of the second when they loaded the bases with one out and scored a run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Manto shot a single into left-center to add a second run for the Pride.

Freshman righty Kara Hammock worked her sixth complete game of the season, surrendering one earned run while fanning six and scattering five hits.

NOTES: UNCW has won three of the four matchups against the Pride … The trip marks the Seahawks' first trip to Hempstead, N.Y. since 2016 … UNCW is 3-3 in one-run games this season … Logan Bjorson worked a scoreless sixth inning in the first game for the Seahawks … The Seahawks moved to 20-1 when allowing two or fewer runs … Casey Jones made her season debut with a pinch-hit appearance in Game 2 … Stockton notched her third career multi-hit game … The Seahawks recorded 12 hits in the doubleheader.
