ÂHEMPSTEAD, New York – Hofstra used a six-run fifth inning to down UNCW, 11-3, and take the series in Colonial Athletic Association softball action at Bill Edwards Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride improved to 15-21 overall and 8-3 in the conference. The Seahawks dipped to 25-10 and are 7-5 in the circuit ahead of a home series next weekend against Charleston.
After UNCW scored two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game, Hofstra plated six runs on four two-out hits, including a two-run double by Pride shortstop Meghan Giordano.
The Pride opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first and second innings to take an early 4-1 lead and made it stand up.
A trio of Seahawks - Mackenzie Amodeo, Jentri Meadows, and Skylar Stockton - combined for six of UNCW's eight hits, while Morgan Britt worked a pair of walks.
Meadows, a junior, got the Seahawks on the board in the second inning with a single to right field that scored freshman Lauren Cope from first.
UNCW added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3, courtesy of infield singles by freshman Elizabeth Winstead and Cope. The Seahawks recorded three hits in the frame, including a double by Amodeo that found the right-center gap with one away.
Hofstra junior Nikki Mullin notched her second straight win against the Seahawks, allowing one earned run and six hits over five innings.
