Seahawks Trim Bulldogs In Regular Season Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW won four singles matches to rally from an early deficit and trim visiting South Carolina State, 4-2, in the men's tennis regular season finale early Friday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks finished the campaign with a 12-8 record and wound up 9-2 at home this spring. The Bulldogs dropped to 9-9 and 1-7 away from home.
 
S.C. State took a close doubles point when the No. 1 team of Benjamin Niv and Aissa Benchakroun edged UNCW's Dillon Gooch and Bekzhod Rasamatov, 7-6 (5), in a 58-minute match. UNCW had won the doubles point in the previous five matches.
 
The Seahawks took control in singles, however, winning the first three matches off the court and tacking on a victory at No. 3. singles for their third straight victory.
 
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Seahawks quickly evened the score when sophomore Reece Falck cruised past S.C. State's Rostislav Haflinger, 6-2, 6-2, at the top of the lineup. Freshman Trey Mallory then topped Ivan Pauluychenko, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 singles and senior Davide Innocenti defeated Niv, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles for a 3-1 advantage.
 
Seahawk sophomore Gabe Hurtado then clinched the match – his third of the season – when the Bogota, Colombia, native outlasted Benchakroun, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 singles position.
 
The Seahawks go through final preparations for the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships next weekend (Apr. 21-24, 2022) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
