Seahawks Strengthen MBB Roster With Transfers

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Reigning Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year Takayo Siddle has bolstered the UNCW men's basketball roster by adding a pair of key transfers to the mix for the 2022-23 season.

Nick Farrar, a 6-6, 230-pound forward from Apex, N.C., will join the Seahawk program after playing one season at the College of Charleston. Eric Van Der Heijden, a 6-8, 205-pound forward from Raleigh, N.C., comes to the Port City following one year at Ole Miss.

"We're very excited about welcoming Nick and Eric – both from North Carolina – back home to join our Seahawk family," said Siddle. "Nick will be a great addition because he's the ultimate competitor. He has the unique ability to score both inside and out with his strength and athletic ability. Nick will play multiple positions for us and bring high energy to the court.

"We're also very excited to have Eric join our program. He's extremely versatile with excellent skills and athleticism. He will have an opportunity to contribute immediately at various positions. Eric comes from a basketball family as both parents were college standouts and played professionally in Europe."

Farrar played in 28 of CofC's 32 games and made two starts for the Cougars this past season. He averaged 5.6 points and 1.7 rebounds, shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, 42.1 percent behind the arc and 96.2 percent at the free throw line.

Farrar exploded for a game-high 23 points in a 66-64 victory at Elon on Feb. 5, 2022, making 9-of-15 field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw stripe. He reached double figures in seven games for the Cougars, averaging 8.9 minutes per game.

A 3-star prospect out of Apex Friendship, the lefty forward, who poured in 98 points over three games in the John Wall Invitational, signed with N.C. State out of high school and played in seven games for the Wolfpack before moving on to Charleston. As a senior at Apex Friendship, Farrar was named District 5 Player of the Year by North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association and earned 2020 NCBCA Boys Basketball All-State team honors and HSOT All-East boy's basketball First-Team accolades.

Van Der Heijden was a top-200 prospect out of Millbrook High School before the No. 9-ranked player in North Carolina signed with Ole Miss.

Van Der Heijden played in 15 games for the Rebels in Oxford, Miss., this past year, averaging 0.4 points and 0.6 rebounds. He totaled six points and nine rebounds in his freshman year.

At Millbrook, Van Der Heijden averaged a double-double of 18.2 points and 11.2 rebounds as the Wildcats won their first North Carolina Class 4A state championship in 2021. Van Der Heijden scored 21 points in the state championship game and was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player following the contest. Millbrook went 42-4 over its final two seasons behind Van Der Heijden, who drained 96 three-pointers and shot 43 percent from deep.

Van Der Heijden earned All-State and First-Team All-District honors from the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association and was selected the Cap 7 Conference Player of the Year.

The Seahawks went 27-9 this past season, capturing a share of the CAA regular season title and winning the championship of the Roman College Basketball Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.
