Women's Tennis Team Posts Fourth Shutout

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team racked up its fourth shutout of the spring season on Thursday, breezing past South Carolina State, 4-0, at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks won their third straight match to improve to 12-4 overall and 8-2 on their home courts. The Bulldogs of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference are now 6-10 after dropping their regular season finale.
 
UNCW nabbed a quick 1-0 lead in Thursday's match after winning the first two doubles pairings off the court. The Seahawks have lost the doubles point in just three matches all season.
 
The No. 2 doubles tandem of junior Zoe Huffman and freshman Stela Joksimovic topped S.C. State's Begum Gumassoy and Ikram Rassif, 6-3, to clinch the early point.
 
In singles, the Seahawks took the first three matches off the court to secure the win. Graduate student Rachel Marthinsen got things rolling with a 6-1, 6-2, decision over Gumussoy at No. 5 singles and Huffman extended the score to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2, verdict against SCSU's Lasya Patnaik at No. 2 singles.
 
Graduate student Lauren Gish of UNCW then clinched the match for the team-best third time by dominating Rassif, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 position.
 
The Seahawks next travel to Charleston, S.C., on Saturday, Apr. 16, 2022, for a noon match against the Cougars. Head Coach Hans Olsen and his team return to the Port City for their home finale on Saturday, Apr. 23, 2022, vs. Charleston at noon.
