Softball Drops Series Finale To Tigers

TOWSON, Md. – Towson used a five-run fifth inning to avoid the sweep and hand the UNCW softball team a 6-0 setback on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

The Seahawks, 24-8 (6-3 CAA), continue their six-game road trip next weekend with a three-game series at Colonial Athletic Association leader Hofstra. The Tigers, 12-22 (2-7 CAA), remain at home for a midweek doubleheader against George Mason.

Senior Janel Gamache singled to right field with one out in the top of the third to push her hitting streak to nine games. The Exeter, R.I., product hit .444 (4-for-9) against the Tigers this weekend.

Freshman pitcher Emily Winstead pitched into the fifth inning, striking out seven and allowing two runs. The right-hander has fanned seven or more batters in all of her last seven starts.

Freshman outfielders Arial Pearce and Elizabeth Winstead led the Seahawks with two hits each. Winstead also extended her hitting streak to four games with a second-inning single through the right side.

The game remained tight until the fifth inning when the Tigers plated five runs on five hits, including a two-run home run over the left-field fence by first baseman Rylee Penrod.
