UNCW Can't Hold Lead In 7-6 Loss

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State's Josh Hood lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score the winning run as UNCW gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to lose 7-6 on Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolf Pack improved to 20-11 while the Seahawks fell to 18-13.

Justin Lawson pitched the ninth for NCSU and earned the win to move to 3-1.

LuJames Groover had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Wolf Pack. Dominic Polilli had a two-run homer.

Jac Croom homered twice and knocked in three runs. Taber Mongero added his third homer of the season.

Cole Benton (1-1) took the loss for UNCW.

How it happened: NC State scored three in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 6-4 deficit. A pair of walks to open the inning eventually came around to score and tie the game. The winning run came on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Home Runs: UNCW: Mongero (3, one out, no one on, top of the first); Croom 2 (4, leading off the second inning; one man on, one out in the fourth), Baucom (6, no one on, two out, in the top of the sixth); NC State: Pilolli (6, one on, two out, bottom of the first)

Up Next: The Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend when they host Towson on Friday at 6 p.m.
