Newton Powers Seahawks To 18-1 Win Over VMI

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW freshman John Newton homered twice and drove in six runs as the Seahawks set season-highs for runs and hits in an 18-1 win on Friday over visiting VMI at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks upped their record to 14-11 with the convincing home win while the Keydets dropped to 8-18.

UNCW banged out 16 hits on the evening with Taber Mongero joining Newton with a three-hit game. Newton singled in the third inning before homering with two on in the fourth and doing so again in the fifth. Brooks Baldwin collected two hits and drove in two runs. Matt Suggs scored three runs and drove in two. He belted his sixth home run with one out in the second. He has now homered in each of his last four games.

RJ Sales (3-1) earned the win, allowing an unearned run over five innings. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 18.2 innings.

Reeves Whitmore had two hits for the Keydets. Zac Morris drove in the lone run for VMI with a ground out in the top of the first.

Nathan Light (2-3) last just an inning for the Keydets after allowing four runs on three hits and three walks.

How it happened: UNCW opened the bottom of the first with three straight hits and a double from Baldwin tied the game at 1-all. Mongero scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Jac Croom plated Baldwin with a sacrifice fly. Noah Bridges, who finished with two hits, brought home Suggs with the fourth and final run of the inning on a hit by pitch.

Inside the box score: The last Seahawk to have at least six RBI in a game was Gavin Stupienski in 2016 against East Tennessee State when he drove in seven … UNCW landed their leadoff hitter on base four times … The Seahawks were 8-for-18 with RISP … UNCW scored a runner from third with less than two outs four times … All six of Newton's RBI's were with two out … UNCW finished with nine two-out RBI's … VMI finished 0-for-7 with two outs and 0-for-8 with RISP.
