Diamond Hawks Score 12 In Final Three Innings For Win

BOONE, N.C. – UNCW exploded for eight runs in the top of the eighth and upended homestanding Appalachian State, 12-3, on Sunday in college baseball action at Smith Stadium.

The Seahawks ran their record to 7-4 with the road win while the Mountaineers, who won the series, dropped to 5-6.

UNCW was held in check through six innings and trailed 3-0 before Jac Croom homered in the top of the seventh. Croom finished with two hits, scored twice and knocked in two runs.

Joining Croom with multi-hit games were Brooks Baldwin and Trevor Marsh. Marsh drove three runs, all coming on a bases-clearing double in a three-run ninth inning.

Freshman reliever Marty Gair (1-0) earned the win with a career-long three innings of work, walking two and striking out a career-high six and did not allow a hit.

Andrew Terrell, Dylan Rogers and Hayden Cross all had two hits on the afternoon for the Mountaineers.

Trey Jernigan (1-1) was saddled with the loss. He surrendered three runs on two hits and a walk in 0.2 innings of relief.

ASU starter Trey Tujetsch kept UNCW off balance during his 6.1 innings, allow a run on three hits, he walked three and struck out five.

How it happened: Matt Suggs led off the eighth inning with a solo shot to centerfield to make it a one-run deficit. Taber Mongero followed with a walk and Ron Evans rang a double off the walk in left one batter later. Jernigan followed with a throwing error down the rightfield line scoring two and UNCW led, 4-3. Croom followed with a sac fly to right and several batters later, Dillon Lifrieri chopped a single over a drawn-in infield for a 7-3 lead. Mongero later tripled in the final two runs of the outburst for a 9-3 lead.

Inside the box score: Marty Gair hit 100 miles per hour with a pitch in the ninth inning … With the win, UNCW now leads the series 10-4 … UNCW pitchers allowed just one two-out hit on the game and allowed the leadoff hitter to reach safely three times … Matt Suggs' homer was 422 feet and Croom's went 396 feet.
