Strong Second Half Pushes Pride Past Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Hofstra women's basketball team used a 13-2 run in the middle of the third quarter to break away from UNCW, 67-52, in the regular season finale for both Colonial Athletic Association teams on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

Hofstra improved to 7-19 overall and 4-14 in the conference. The Seahawks finish the regular season at 3-25 overall and 0-18 in the circuit.

Senior guard Carrie Gross delivered a team-high 12 points off the bench for UNCW, who honored five players (Allie Best, Dejah Carter, Sierra DaCosta, Rinnah Green, and Dazia Powell) in a special pregame Senior Day ceremony.

Redshirt senior Jaylen Hines led the Pride with 20 points and eight rebounds. Hines was joined in double-digits scoring by seniors Jahsyni Knight and Rosi Nicholson, who had 11 markers apiece.

The Seahawks took a 30-23 advantage into halftime, but the Pride outscored the Seahawks, 44-22, in the final two periods to sweep the season series.

The teams traded baskets the first four-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter before the Pride rattled off 10 consecutive points to take the lead, 39-36, on a Knight three-pointer at the 3:52 mark.

UNCW and Hofstra will meet for a third time this season on Thursday, Mar. 10, in the opening round of the 2022 CAA Women's Basketball Championship in Philadelphia, Pa.

GAME NOTES: Hofstra closed the game on an 8-0 run … The Seahawks outrebounded the Pride, 34-26 … There were four ties and six lead changes in the game … The Pride added 26 points off 19 Seahawk turnovers …. UNCW shot 43.5 percent (20-of-46) from the field, including 41.5 percent (5-of12) from beyond the arc … Carter added seven rebounds … The Pride starting five totaled 59 points.
