Pride Edge Seahawks In CAA First Round

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Eighth-seeded Hofstra escaped the Daskalakis Athletic Center with a narrow 46-45 victory over the No. 9 Seahawks that went down to the final buzzer in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship presented by Primis on Thursday afternoon.

The Pride (8-19) bested the Seahawks for the third time this season and moved on to face top-ranked Drexel in the CAA Quarterfinals on Friday. UNCW finishes its season at 3-26 overall.

Hofstra was led by All-CAA Third-Teamer Jaylen Hines' seventh double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Clinton, Md., product scored 15 of her 22 markers in the second half.

UNCW was paced by graduate guard Allie Best's 14 points on 4-of-9 from three-pointer range. Joining the Marist transfer in double-digits was fellow graduate guard Sierra DaCosta with 11 points.

With the game tied, 43-all, with 66 seconds remaining, Hofstra's Sorelle Ineza sank a triple to put the Pride in front, 46-43. Following a timeout, Best banked in a floater off the left glass to cut the deficit to one with 38.8 ticks to go.

The Pride beat the Seahawks' press, but Micah Hoggatt intercepted a pass in mid-air to give the Seahawks possession with 12.8 seconds left and a chance to win. The Pride then used the last two of their team fouls, setting up an inbounds play for the Seahawks with two seconds on the clock.

Sophomore guard Mary McMillan received the inbounds bounce pass from Best, but was met by Rosi Nicholson, an All-CAA Defensive team member, who forced McMillan to take an off-balanced three that was off the mark as the Pride advanced to the CAA Quarterfinals.

Hofstra rattled off 10 unanswered points in the first three minutes of play, but the Seahawks responded with six straight points to cut the deficit to four points on two jumpers by center Asia Henderson with a minute to go in the first quarter.

Trailing 17-9 with 6:20 before halftime, the Seahawks went on a 12-1 run and took their first lead, 21-18, on a Best triple from the top of the key with 1:48 on the clock. The Pride responded with the final five points of the period and took a slim 23-21 edge into intermission.

The Seahawks ran into trouble again in the third period when the Pride converted six free throws in an 8-0 spurt before UNCW closed the third's final 2:17 with five straight points, including a runner off the right glass by McMillan, to tie it, 35-all, entering the final quarter.

The fourth act began with a DaCosta mid-range jumper and Best trifecta, but the Pride roared back with six points, all by Hines, to take 41-40 edge with 4:20 on the clock. Hoggatt briefly gave the Seahawks the lead on a jumper before Hines responded with another layup to make it 43-32 with 2:20 to go.

DaCosta was fouled at the 2:06 mark and converted one of two shots at the charity stripe to knot the game at 43, setting up the final two minutes.
