Hammock, Winstead Toss Shutouts In Twinbill Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman pitchers Emily Winstead and Kara Hammock tossed complete-game shutouts to sweep a Saturday doubleheader against St. Bonaventure at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks, winners of four straight games, improved to 14-3 overall after besting the Bonnies (1-7), 2-0, in the first game and 8-0 in the second game of the twinbill.

UNCW and SBU return for the series finale tomorrow, Mar. 6, at noon at Boseman Field. The game will be streamed on FloSports with Jim Whitmeyer and Tom Lamont on the call.

GAME 1 | UNCW 2, St. Bonaventure 0

Winstead bested Bonnies junior Elizabeth Lis in a pitcher's duel to win the first game of the day.

Catcher Mackenzie Amodeo broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when she slapped a single through the right side to score shortstop Mary Sobataka.

The next batter, Camryn Dean, popped a ball into center field that was misplayed and allowed Amodeo to score from first.

The Bonnies threatened in the top of the sixth after Olivia Whitecar and Emily Lewandowski worked full-count walks to begin the frame.

Winstead stayed composed and induced a pop-out to center, struck out Olivia Moon, and got Stewart to ground out to end the threat.

The Bunn, N.C., product pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to pick up her third win of the season.

GAME 2 | UNCW 8, St. Bonaventure 0 (five innings)

Hammock tossed her third shutout of the season and fanned seven Bonnies as the Seahawks offense plated eight runs on nine hits.

With two runners on and one out, catcher Anna Knox roped a bases-clearing double to right field in the bottom of the third inning.

First baseman Janel Gamache then lined a single up the middle that scored Knox and put the Seahawks ahead, 3-0.

Third baseman Logan Bjorson worked a full-count walk in the bottom of the fourth and was pinch-ran for by freshman Elizabeth Winstead, who immediately swiped second.

The next batter, Dean, shot a double to right-center on a 3-2 count that scored Winstead. Right fielder Morgan Britt then tripled down the left-field line to score Dean, before second baseman Tayler Vitola singled home Britt a batter later.

Gamache added her second RBI of the game with another single up the middle to plate Vitola and make it a 7-0 ballgame.

Sobataka began the bottom of the fifth with a single and came around to score on a Bjorson bunt after a Bonnie throwing error to seal the 8-0 victory.
