Diamond Hawks Unable To Close Out Game

App State rallies with eight runs in the final two innings

BOONE, N.C. – The UNCW bullpen blew a seven-run lead over the final two innings as Appalachian State rallied to clinch the weekend series with a 12-11 win on Saturday at Smith Field.

The Mountaineers evened their record at 5-5 after winning on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. The Seahawks, who have dropped both their road contests this season, slid to 6-4 with the one-run loss.

Four Mountaineers combined for 14 of ASU's 17 hits on the afternoon. Leading the charge at the top of the order were Andrew Terrell and Dylan Rogers with four hits apiece while Hayden Cross and Austin St. Laurent both added three hits. Roges knocked in four runs while Terrell scored four times. Hunter Bryson hit his third home run of the season in a four-run eighth inning.

ASU reliever Cameron Kepley (1-0) was credited with the win despite not throwing a pitch. He ended the top of the ninth by picking off a Seahawk base runner at first to end the inning.

Brooks Baldwin collected four hits including his third home run of the season. Dillon Lifrieri, Ron Evans and Jac Croom had two hits apiece and Croom knocked in three runs.

UNCW reliever Hunter Hodges (1-1) took the loss after allowing all four runs in the ninth.

How it happened: Trailing 11-8, App State opened the inning when a swinging third strike wasn't blocked, allowing St. Laurent to reach first safely. Andrew Greckel walked, and Alex Aguila followed with an infield single in the hole between third and shortstop. Terrell drew a bases-loaded walk and Rogers followed with a two-run single to right to tie the game at 11-all. An intentional walk loaded the bases with none out. After a lineout to second base, reliever Cody Benton bounced a pitch allowing the winning run to score.

Inside the box score: UNCW batters struck out 16 times … The Seahawks managed to get their leadoff hitter on base safely in seven innings but were just 2-for-10 with two out and 4-for-17 with RISP … App State, meanwhile, landed their leadoff hitter on base six times and went 7-for-18 with RISP … Baldwin extended his hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to last season … Lifrieri's hitting streak is now four games.
