Mongero Collects Three Hits In Series Opening Loss

BOONE, N.C. – UNCW's Taber Mongero had a game-high three hits, but Appalachian State opened the weekend series with a 4-2 win over the Seahawks on Friday at Smith Field.

The Mountaineers improved to 4-5 with the win in their home opener while the Seahawks dropped to 6-3 in their first road test of the season.

ASU's Tyler Tuthill (1-2) earned the win after limiting the Seahawks to two runs on seven hits over seven innings. Eli Ellington notched his second save of the season after pitching the ninth inning.

Andrew Greckel led ASU with a pair of hits and Alex Aguila doubled in the tying and go-ahead runs on his only hit of the day.

Mongero was joined by Dillon Lifrieri and Kevin Pitarra, who each had a multiple-hit game. Lifrieri drove in two runs on his third home run of the season and a seventh-inning double. Pitarra, meanwhile, had a pair of singles.

Matt Gaither (1-1) took the loss after carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning before a two-out single broke it up. Gaither surrendered three runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings.

How it happened: Trailing 1-0, App State struck for two runs with two outs to take the lead. Austin St. Laurent singled with two outs and Greckel followed with a single to right. Aguila stepped to the plate and doubled inside the third base bag to score both runners.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks advanced a runner just three times in 17 opportunities and had one hit with RISP … ASU was 8-for-13 in advancing a base runner … Game time was two hours and 22 minutes … With a ninth-inning single, Brooks Baldwin extended his hitting and on base streak to 10 games dating back to last season.
