Singles Play Boosts Seahawks Past UNCG

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – UNCW swept five of six singles matches to rally past UNCG, 5-2, in women's tennis action on Sunday at the UNCG tennis courts.
 
The Seahawks, playing the second leg of a three-match road trip, raised their record to 10-4, including 6-2 against state opponents. The Spartans plummeted to 2-11 and 1-4 on their home courts.
 
UNCW dropped the doubles point, but stormed back in singles, losing only at No. 6 singles on the day. The Seahawks are 51-33 in singles matches this spring.
 
Graduate student Lauren Gish got things going at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2, verdict against UNCG's Juliana Craft to even the score at 1-all. Freshman Stela Joksimovic then put the Seahawks on top, 2-1, by trimming Eugenia Camacho, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
 
Junior Sarah Merrill made in three straight singles victories and a 3-1 advantage following a 6-1, 6-3, triumph against UNCG's Hannah Mitchell at the No. 5 position.
 
After the Spartans won at No. 6 singles, junior Zoe Huffman clinched the match for the first time this season by tripping up Erika Barquero, 6-3, 6-4, at the top of the lineup.
 
The Seahawks conclude a three-match road swing on Friday, April 8, with a visit to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood in a 3 p.m. first toss.
