Evans Keys Seahawk Win With Three Hits

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Ron Evans had three hits and Matt Suggs keyed a five-run seventh inning as UNCW knocked off visiting Coastal Carolina, 9-4, in college baseball action on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks halted a brief two-game skid to improve to 6-2 while the Chanticleers saw their five-game winning streak come to a half and dipped to 6-2.

Evans knocked in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, on three singles. Suggs, meanwhile, doubled in two runs in a five-run seventh as UNCW wiped out a 4-3 deficit for an 8-4 lead.

Adding two hits apiece for the Seahawks were Brooks Baldwin, Trevor Marsh, Taber Mongero and Jac Croom.

Reliever Carter Holjes (2-0) was credited with the win after tossing two shutout innings.

John Kelly (0-1) took the loss for CCU, allowing two runs in that seventh inning.

Zach Beach scored twice as seven different Chants had hits.

How it happened: Croom singled and Noah Bridges followed with a walk to open the seventh inning. Baldwin singled in the hole between first and second and an errant throw sailed into left allowing Croom to score and tie it. Evans followed with an infield chopper that plated Bridges for the lead. Two batters later, Suggs doubled into the gap in right center to extend the lead to 7-4.
