Seahawks Even CAA Record In Women's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Player of the Week Sasha Belaya clinched a match for the second time this season as UNCW pounded conference rival Towson, 6-1, early Saturday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Seahawks raised their record to 9-3 on the season and evened their CAA record at 1-1. UNCW concluded a four-match homestand with a 3-1 scorecard by winning the second of back-to-back conference matches.
 
Towson lost its fifth straight and nosedived to 1-8 this spring, including 0-5 away from home. The Tigers are just 1-12 lifetime vs. the Seahawks.
 
The Seahawks swept all three doubles matches and nailed down the early point when the No. 3 tandem of Brinley Bell and Anna Daniels thumped Towson's Jessica Assenmacher and Sissi Axelsson, 6-2.
 
UNCW then dominated singles play to close out the match. Daniels defeated Towson's Sissi Axelsson, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles to move the score to 2-0 and Zoe Huffman's 6-0, 6-4, decision over Themis Haliou at No. 2 singles pushed the margin to 3-0. Belaya tied a bow on the match with a 6-4, 6-2, triumph against Towson's Amelia Lawson.
 
The Seahawks next travel to Elon, N.C., on Saturday, March 26, for their next match in a 1 p.m. start against Elon's Phoenix at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
