Seahawks Compete In High Point Meet

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Seven members of the UNCW track and field team journey to the Triad this weekend to participate in the Bill Webb Combined Events/Bob Davidson Memorial Meet hosted by High Point.

The Seahawks have staged back-to-back meets and are looking forward to some new competition at High Point's Vert Stadium. Upgraded in 2018 with FieldTurf CORE, Vert Stadium served as the site of the Big South Conference Track & Field Championships in 2015, 2018 and 2021.

Teams competing in the meet include UNCW, High Point, Bryant, Concord, Duke, Elon (Women only), James Madison (Women only), Johnson C. Smith, Kentucky Christian, Lafayette, Lipscomb, Louisburg (Men only), North Carolina A&T, North Carolina, Pfeiffer, Rio Grande, Rochester (Mich.) (Women only), Saint Francis, St. Augustine's, Wake Forest and William Peace.

Six of the teams – North Carolina A&T (M&W), North Carolina (M&W), Duke (W) and High Point (W) - scored at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Seahawk student-athletes competing include Jon Lloyd (javelin), Ryan DeBarber (javelin), Jena Rhodes (pole vault), Maddie Norr (pole vault), Ryan Hunt (decathlon), Courtney Lines (heptahlon) and Elise Hall (pole vault).

Live results will be provided by Flash Results. Both days will be streamed live on ESPN+. Video coverage starts at 5 p.m. on Friday and continues throughout Saturday.

"Our team is building momentum and this is another great opportunity to showcase that by traveling up to High Point this weekend," said third-year head coach Jeff Klaves.

"A big part of this meet is the multi-events of decathlon and heptathlon. Ryan (Hunt) will be doing only the second decathlon of his career. In his first one last year, he captured the CAA title and is looking to build on his score that won the championship last May. Courtney (Lines) will be competing in the first heptathlon of her career. She has always been a sprinter and jumper in the program, but has been learning the other events to prepare for this opportunity to compete in the multis."

A 1955 graduate of High Point, Davidson is the Panthers' longest-tenured coach in High Point history, leading the men's and later women's cross country and track and field program for 39 seasons from 1962-2001. He was honored as coach of the year 21 times across three conferences.

Webb earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from High Point in 1971. He was an All-Conference selection, team captain and school record holder for the track and field team. Webb is U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Hall of Famer. Webb had a nearly 40-year career as a collegiate coach, culminating with 24 years at Tennessee – the first 10 as assistant coach before his final 14 as head coach. He became the first coach in UT history to win back-to-back NCAA titles after following up the 2001 NCAA outdoor crown with the 2002 NCAA indoor championship.
