UNCW Knocks Off No. 67 Penn State, 4-3

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Anna Daniels won a three-setter at No. 6 singles to lift the UNCW women's tennis team to a 4-3 upset of No. 67 Penn State early Sunday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks won their third match in a row to soar to 8-2 on the season, including 6-1 on their home courts. It was the first meeting between the two schools and gave Hans Olsen's club a victory over a Power 5 opponent.
 
The Nittany Lions, 6-7, split their spring break trip after beating East Carolina, 4-0, on Friday and stand 4-4 away from home.
 
In a tightly contested see-saw match, the Seahawks rallied from behind on three occasions to pull out the decision against the Big Ten Conference opponent.
 
The Seahawks secured the crucial doubles point for the ninth time in 10 matches when the No. 1 tandem of graduate transfers Sasha Belaya and Lauren Gish trimmed PSU's Olivia Ryan and Gabby O'Gorman, 6-2. The win pushed UNCW's record in doubles to 22-7.
 
The two clubs then traded wins in the first five singles matches off the court before Daniels clinched a match for the first time this spring by outlasting Ryan at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Belaya and Gish also had key wins for the Seahawks, who own a 38-22 (.633) record in singles this season.
 
The Seahawks continue their four-match homestand on Thursday, March 17, 2022, with a noon match against Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary.
