Seahawks Extend Win Streak To Seven In Sunday Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW extended its win streak to seven games and outscored Maryland Eastern Shore, 16-1, to sweep a doubleheader on Sunday at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (17-3) won the first game, 8-0, behind a shutout by senior Janel Gamache, who moved into fifth on the school's all-time RBI list with a two-run home run to left-center in the fourth inning.

The Hawks (2-15), in their first trip to the Port City, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second contest before the Seahawks sealed the deal with two four-run innings to win, 8-1.

Up next, UNCW hits the road for the second time this year on Tuesday, Mar. 15, for a midweek game at North Carolina. First pitch at Anderson Softball Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. is slated for 6 p.m.

GAME 1 | UNCW 8, UMES 0 (six innings)

Gamache notched her second shutout this season in six innings while matching her season-high with six strikeouts.

The game was scoreless through 2.5 innings when the Seahawks loaded the bases with one out on a hit-by-pitch and two walks worked by Anna Knox and Gamache.

Freshman Mackenzie Amodeo drove in a run with a sac-fly to centerfield. Left fielder Arial Pearce then singled up the middle to plate Knox and Gamache.

Pearce came around to score when shortstop Mary Sobataka sliced a single up the middle to make it 4-0 after three innings.

In the fourth inning, Knox shot the first pitch down the left-field line for a double. Gamache trotted to the plate and, on a 2-1 count, smashed her fifth round-tripper this season to the batting cages beyond the left-field wall for a 6-0 lead.

Pearce reached again in the bottom of the fifth on a single and then scored on a Hawks fielding error later in the inning.

The Seahawks worked the bases loaded in the sixth for Sobataka, who worked a full count walk to plate the winning run, 8-0.

GAME 2 | UNCW 8, UMES 1

Freshman Emily Winstead picked up her fifth win of the season in 4.1 innings of relief work with six strikeouts in the weekend finale.

Gamache began the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off triple through the right-center gap. Amodeo then reached on a fielder's choice.

A run scored on a single by Pearce and Sobataka wore the next pitch to load the bases for UNCW. Right fielder Morgan Britt then lined a single up the middle to add on two more runs.

Dean flew out to straightaway-center that plated Sobataka to cap the four-run frame.

Britt and Camryn Dean started the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles. Senior Logan Bjorson followed with a bloop single into shallow centerfield to score Britt.

Second baseman Tayler Vitola reached on a fielder's choice by the pitcher, but Dean beat the throw home to score.

Vitola and Bjorson advanced on a sac-fly by Gamache and came around to score when Amodeo rocketed a single through the left side to make it, 8-1.
