George, Tar Heels Turn Back Seahawks

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina pitcher Hannah George tossed a no-hitter to snap UNCW's seven-game win streak with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday evening at Anderson Softball Stadium.

North Carolina improved to 15-10 with its fourth win in five games. The Seahawks fell to 17-4 overall and are idle until Wednesday, Mar. 23, when they play at East Carolina.

Freshman right-hander Emily Winstead (5-2) tossed her third complete game this year, giving up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.

George earned her ninth win this season in the historic feat. The Columbus, Ga., product recorded her third shutout in 12 starts with seven strikeouts and two walks.

In the top of the seventh, freshman Mackenzie Amodeo nearly spoiled the no-no with a long fly ball to the center-field warning track that died just short of the wall and fell into the glove of Bri Stubbs for the first out.

The right-handed George then induced two groundouts back to herself to complete the first no-hitter of her four-year career.

Stubbs led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored when Taylor Greene knocked a home run over the left-center wall to put the Tar Heels ahead by two runs.

The Seahawks threatened in the top of the sixth when second baseman Tayler Vitola reached on a fielding error by second baseman Skyler Brooks. Vitola then stole second to advance into scoring position with one out.

George responded with back-to-back punchouts by Anna Knox and Janel Gamache to escape the frame unscathed.

GAME NOTES: The Tar Heels have won two consecutive meetings against the Seahawks … Vitola has reached base in 10 straight games … Winstead has struck out at least six batters in each of her last six appearances … It was the Seahawks' third road game this season … UNCW was last shutout on Apr. 10, 2021, against James Madison, a 35-game span … Gamache and Mary Sobataka each worked walks.
