Diamond Hawks Edged Late By Owls, 4-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Ethan Baucom had three hits, including a two-run home run, for UNCW, but the Seahawks were unable to overcome 10 walks issued as Kennesaw State won the opener of a three-game series, 4-3, on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Owls improved to 9-4 while the Seahawks fell to 7-5 overall and 6-3 at home.

Josh Hatcher, who finished with three hits, drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth with a two-out single. No other KSU player had more than one hit.

Reliever Jared Rine (1-0) held the Seahawks to one hit and a walk over three innings of shutout baseball.

Baucom had three hits and his third roundtripper of the season tied the game in the bottom of the sixth at 3-all.

UNCW freshman reliever Marty Gair (1-1) walked four and allowed one hit in 1.2 innings of relief.

How it happened: Gair walked the first two hitters of the KSU eighth inning and almost pitched out of it, but Hatcher was able to line a 2-0 offering into leftfield to score pinch runner Joseph Gossett with two out.

Inside the box score: Both teams landed their leadoff hitter on base five times … Kennesaw score two runners from third in three chances while UNCW was 0-for-1 … With 10 walks today, the Seahawks have now walked double digits twice this season (Feb. 20 vs. St. John's).
