UNCW Sweeps Pitching Dominated Twinbill

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Brooks Baldwin drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as UNCW completed a doubleheader sweep of Kennesaw State with a 2-1 win on Sunday.

The Seahawks, who won the first game 3-0, pushed their record to 9-6 with the series win. The Owl, meanwhile, fell to an identical 9-6.

Bryce Cota (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Seahawks.

Chris Thorburn, who scored the winning run, had two hits and Taber Mongero added three and drove in a run in the nightcap.

Nick Hassen and Donovan Cash had two hits apiece. Cash drove in KSU's lone run of game two with a two-out single in the third.
KSU reliever Nathan Holler (2-2) took the loss.

How it happened: Thorburn opened the inning with a single to left and moved into scoring position on Ron Evans' sacrifice bunt. Trevor Marsh followed with a single deep into the third base hole to put runners on the corner. An intentional walk to Mongero loaded the bases and two batters later, Baldwin worked a full count and watch ball four stay off the plate for a game-winning walk.

Inside the box score: Seahawk pitching held KSU to one-hit with RISP and two hits with two out … UNCW continued to get the leadoff hitter on base, doing so four times … All three runs in the second game were with two outs … Dillon Lifrieri singled in the first inning of game two to extend his hitting streak to nine games … Cyle Phelan has three relief outings of at least three innings and has not given up a run in any of them.

Home Runs: none

Game 1: UNCW capitalized on a dropped pop in the fifth inning to score three unearned runs in the opener for a 3-0 win in seven innings. Matt Gaither (2-1) scattered two hits over six shutout innings for the win and Cole Benton pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.
Lifrieri doubled twice to lead the UNCW lineup and had the only RBI of the game.

John Bezdicek (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, striking out seven over five innings.

Up next: The Seahawks continue the homestand on Mar. 16 against Ohio State at 6 p.m.
