Gamache, Hammock Spin Gems In Saturday Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Pitchers Kara Hammock and Janel Gamache hurled 12 innings of one-run ball as the UNCW softball team swept its Saturday doubleheader over NC Central and Canisius at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks improved to 12-3 on the season by taking three of four games this weekend. UNCW secured an 8-0 victory over NCCU in the morning game and then bested the Golden Griffins, 4-1, in the weekend finale.

UNCW returns next weekend for a three-game series against St. Bonaventure at Boseman Field. The Seahawks play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 5, beginning at noon, and complete the series with a Sunday, Mar. 6, game at noon.

GAME 1 | UNCW 8, NC Central 0 (five innings)

UNCW scored twice in the bottom of the second when junior Mary Sobataka reached on an Eagles fielding error that scored freshman Lauren Cope from third.

A batter later, catcher Mackenzie Amodeo rocketed a double through the left-center gap to put the Seahawks ahead by two runs.

Cope capped a two-hit day with an RBI double that plated Lauryn Richardson and Gamache in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Gamache put two more runs on the board when she laced a fourth-inning triple down the right-field line after Arial Pearce tacked on a run with a groundout on the previous at-bat.

In the bottom of the fifth, pinch-hitter Jentri Meadows doubled home junior Susie Borda to win the game, 8-0.

Hammock pitched a one-hitter in five scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts to notch her fourth win of the season.

GAME 2 | UNCW 4, Canisius 1

Gamache tossed her second complete game of the season to split the season series against the Griffins, 2-2. The Exeter, R.I., product needed only 91 pitches in seven innings to earn her second win of the season.

Canisius struck first in the top of the second when catcher Gianna Fazzolari hammered a solo home run out to left-center.

In the bottom of the third, catcher Anna Knox trotted to the plate with Camryn Dean on base. On a 0-1 count, the Mooresville, N.C., product hammered the go-ahead homer over the right-center wall to take the lead, 2-1.

Sobataka and right fielder Skylar Stockton added insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth when they rifled back-to-back RBI singles down the right-field line to complete the scoring.
