Rutgers Hands Diamond Hawks Twinbill Loss

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Danny DiGeorgio had three hits and four runs batted in the opener and four Rutgers pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Scarlet Knights swept a doubleheader from UNCW, 12-5 and 2-0, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

Rutgers improved to 5-1 with the sweep and finished the Carolinas Coastline Classic with a 2-1 mark while the Seahawks dropped to 5-2 and were 1-2 in the classic.

In the opener, RU roughed up Seahawk pitching for eight runs in the first three innings and held an 8-1 lead through three innings. Ryan Lasko held game-high honors with four hits.

Jared Kollar (1-0) picked up the win with five innings of work. Justin Sinibaldi notched his first save of the season.

Brooks Baldwin and Matt Suggs both had two hits and Ethan Baucom hit his first home run as a Seahawk.

RJ Sales (0-1) was knocked out of the game in the second inning after allowing five runs in one-plus innings of work.

In the nightcap, Rutgers scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and it was all it would need.

Nathan Florence (1-0) tossed five shutout innings and struck out nine. Dale Stanavich tossed the final 1.1 innings for the save.

Brett Banks (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs over five innings of work.

The Seahawks host Coastal Carolina on March 2 at 4 p.m. as they conclude an eight-game homestand to open the season.
