Gaither Pitches UNCW Past Ball State, 2-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Matt Gaither struck out a career-high eight over seven shutout innings as UNCW blanked visiting Ball State, 2-0, on Friday in the Carolinas Coastline Classic at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks stayed perfect at 5-0 to open the season while the Cardinals dropped to 2-3.

Gaither (1-0) earned the win in his second start of the season and his seven innings were also a career-long for the lefthander. Hunter Hodges nailed down his first save of the season, retiring all three hitters he faced in the ninth.

BSU starter Tyler Schweitzer (0-1) was the hard-luck loser. The lefthander held the Seahawks to four hits and a pair of runs over six innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and walked one.

UNCW's Brooks Baldwin fueled the offense by himself. Baldwin finished with three hits, including his second home run of the season, and a pair of runs batted in. He also stole two bases to bring his season total to seven.

Amir Wright paced the Cardinals with three hits at the top of the order, including a double and a triple. Nick Powell added two hits.
How it happened: With one out in the bottom of the third, Kevin Pitarra drew a one-out walk and Baldwin followed with a shot to left on an 0-2 offering from Schweitzer.

Home Runs: UNCW: Brooks Baldwin (2, one one, bottom of the third)
