Elon Breaks Away From Seahawks

Elon, N.C. – Elon used a 12-3 run over a four-minute stretch in the second quarter to break away from UNCW, 64-43, in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Schar Center.
 
The Phoenix picked up their fifth straight win to improve to 15-9 overall and are an even 7-7 in the CAA. The Seahawks fell to 3-22 overall and are 0-14 in the circuit.
 
Senior guard Carrie Gross reached double-figures scoring for the fourth time in six games with 16 points for the Seahawks.
 
Elon was paced by senior guard Brie Perpignan's 14 points while senior center Evonna McGill delivered 13 points off the bench.
 
The Phoenix led 11-8 after a close first quarter before they extended their lead to double digits, 20-9, on a three-pointer from senior forward Ajia James at the 7:21 mark in the second act.
 
Gross converted a layup with 2:30 on the clock before halftime, but Perpignan countered with a layup off the right side to give Elon a 27-16 advantage at the half.
 
The Seahawks scored five of the first seven points of the third quarter to cut Elon's lead down to 29-21 at the 6:56 mark. The Phoenix, however, closed the third period on a 14-4 run to seal the verdict.
 
UNCW returns home on Sunday, Feb. 27, to host Charleston in its annual Play4Kay game at Trask Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Elon swept the season series against UNCW ... There were 35 turnovers in the game ... The teams made 87.5 percent (21-of-24) from the free throw line ... UNCW shot 36.4 (16-of-44) percent from the floor ... Elon won the rebounding battle by a narrow 30-27 margin ... There were 50 points scored in the paint.
