Charleston Sweeps Season Series Over Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Charleston women's basketball team used an 18-2 run midway through the first quarter to claim an 87-56 victory over UNCW in the Seahawks' annual Play4Kay game on Sunday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

The Cougars used a full-court press most of the game to improve to 15-7 overall and 7-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks dropped to 3-23 overall and are 0-16 in the circuit.

"I thought the effort level was there, but we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter," said Tina Martin, UNCW's interim head coach. "Our girls really want to play well at home. The fans are great. These kids are giving effort, but we did get tired."

Graduate guard Allie Best scored a season-high 16 points while senior guard Carrie Gross chipped in 14 markers for the Seahawks.

Charleston had two players record double-doubles in guard Latrice Perkins (24 points and 11 rebounds) and forward Arynn Eady (16 points and 11 rebounds). Guard Jenna Annecchiarico (20 pts.) notched her tenth game of the year with 20 or more points while forward Anika McGarity added 14 points.

Best drained a three-pointer to start the day and converted a pair of free throws to give the Seahawks an early 5-0 lead at the 7:46 point in the first period. The Cougars then scored 15 unanswered points to go up 15-5 after Perkins nailed a jumper with 3:52 on the clock.

The Seahawks, who trailed 42-29 at halftime, whittled the deficit down to 10 points, 53-43, when Evan Miller sank a free throw at the 2:54 mark in the third act.

The Cougars turned up the offense and outscored the Seahawks, 34-13, the rest of the game to seal the 87-56 victory on the road.

UNCW returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 3, against Northeastern. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Trask Coliseum.
