Women's Tennis Team Thumps ECU, 6-1

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team won its third consecutive match by dominating rival East Carolina, 6-1, early Sunday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks pushed their record to 4-1 on the season by winning the early doubles point and then tacking on five singles victories. ECU dropped to 2-4 this spring.
 
UNCW jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage by capturing the first two doubles matches off the court. The tandem of freshman Stela Joksimovic and junior Zoe Huffman cruised past ECU's Alisa Diercksen and Sofia Cerezo Holgado, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles to secure the point.
 
In singles, Sasha Belaya, Lauren Gish and Brinley Bell reeled off wins as the Seahawks put the match away early.
 
Belaya, a graduate transfer from Illinois, defeated ECU's Martina Muzzolon, 6-4, 6-0, at the top of the lineup to raise the score to 2-0 and Gish, a graduate transfer from Vanderbilt, made it 3-0 after trimming Holgado, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.
 
Bell, a junior from High Point, N.C., clinched a match for the first time this season by knocking off Diercksen, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 position.
 
The Seahawks, 2-0 on their current four-match homestand, entertain Methodist on Friday in a 3 p.m. first toss at the UNCW Courts.
